Owner of bar selling deadly liquor arrested 15 times, Commissioner says as death toll hits 13

It is now emerging that the owner of a bar in Kangai village, Mwea, where people died while others lost their sight after consuming illicit liquor has been arrested on several occasions.

Central Regional Commissioner Frederick Shisia says the owner of California bar has been arrested 15 times, and on all those occasions, the courts have been setting him free.

Shisia says that the death toll from the Tuesday, February 6 afternoon incident has reached 13, after seven more people succumbed.

The commissioner shifted blame to the courts, insisting that the deaths could have been avoided had the courts punished the owner of the bar selling the deadly liquor.

“It is very unfortunate that the perpetrator of what we are witnessing here has been to court more than 15 times, that tells you that there is something that is not happening right,” he rued.

The administrator added that there is need for all government agencies to work in a collaborative way to ensure justice is done and prevent such calamities from happening.

He said that the multi agency team will collect all the data and ensure a water-tight case against the owner, who has since been arrested.
