22 people were killed in South-west Pakistan by the militant group Balach Liberation Army (BLA).
According to official reports, the 22 victims were forcefully removed from their vehicles and their identities checked.
The attack happened on a highway in Balochistan province where there has been an ongoing ethnic violence.
The armed men checked the identities, separating the Punjab from the others then proceeding to shoot them.
A senior local official, said that around 30 to 40 militants were involved.
He added that the gunmen stopped 22 vehicles that were travelling to and from Punjab for inspection and persons identified to be Punjab would get shot.
The BLA said it was targeting military personnel travelling in civilian clothes, according to news agency Reuters.
Before the attack, BLA warned the Baloch public to stay away from the highway, adding that their “fight is against the occupying Pakistani military”.
“We have taken full control of all major highways across Balochistan, blocking them completely,” it stated.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep grief and condemnation over the terrorist attack in a statement.
A similar incident happened in April this year where nine passengers were forcefully pulled out from a bus in Balochistan and shot dead after their IDs were checked.
