Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro late Monday after experiencing health issues during the G20 summit.
A statement from Paraguayan authorities confirmed that Peña, 46, was treated at the Samaritano Hospital in Botafogo following an episode of “indisposition.”
The hospital issued a medical bulletin indicating that the president suffered from a “malaise in the afternoon” and underwent diagnostic tests. “The head of state is doing well, and his current health condition is stable,” the statement read.
Witnesses at the summit venue reported seeing Peña transported by ambulance earlier in the day. Some Latin American media outlets suggested he may have experienced chest pains, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Vice President Pedro Alliana later addressed the situation on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, stating, “I spoke with President Peña, who is in Rio de Janeiro’s Samaritano Hospital after a slight illness. He is doing well and awaiting the results of medical tests.”
Although Paraguay is not a G20 member, Peña was among several leaders invited to the summit by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the host of this year’s meeting.
