Parents urged to monitor and take care of children during Christmas celebrations

Parents and guardians have been called upon to prioritize the safety and well-being of their children during the festive season by closely monitoring their movements, company, and activities they engage in.

Speaking during a press briefing in Kapenguria on December 18, 2024, Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong particularly raised concerns about the vulnerability of girls during the December holidays.

Lochakapong emphasized the importance of shielding children from risky behaviors, negative influences, drugs, alcoholism and dangers of teenage pregnancies, early marriages, female genital mutilation (FGM), and other harmful practices.

His remarks come at a time when West Pokot County is experiencing increasing challenges related to teen pregnancies, youth involvement in crime and drug abuse.

The Sigor MP pointed out that most teenagers are likely to fall prey to bad habits during this season adding that parents should know the kind of activities their children take part in.

He warned that without proper guidance, the youth face risks such as early pregnancies, which could derail their education and future goals.

Additionally, he cautioned that girls exposed to unsafe environments might also be at risk of contracting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

“It is the responsibility of every parent to ensure that their children are safe and protected during this festive season,” he said.

The MP noted the vulnerability of children during long holidays due to their increased free time and the temptations that come with it.

Additionally, he urged parents to keep children actively engaged in constructive activities such as participating in church programmes like youth camps, seminars, and conferences; household chores; and sporting activities to keep them occupied.

“Our children have bright and wonderful futures ahead of them, and it is our duty as parents and guardians to guide them wisely and ensure that their potential is not ruined by bad decisions or negative peer influence,” he said.

He also urged parents to ensure their children stay connected to their education, by encouraging them to complete assignments and revise their schoolwork to avoid falling behind when the new term begins in January.
