The Kenya 7s team, Shujaa, had a disappointing start at the 2024 Paris Olympics, falling 31-12 in their opening Pool B match against Argentina.
Coach Kevin Wambua’s charges had an impressive start, showcasing incredible speed and precision in ball handling.
Chrissant Ojwang gifted Kenya their first try after plowing through the Argentine defense, which was duly converted.
The result was 7-5 in favor of Kenya at halftime. In the second half, Ojwang set up KCB’s Kevin Wekesa, who scored Kenya’s second try.
However, the South Americans rallied, flipping the score sheet in their favor by capitalizing on Shujaa’s mistakes and scoring back-to-back tries in the dying minutes to end the match 31-12.
Kenya will now face Australia in the second Pool B fixture at 8:00 PM.
The rugby sevens ranking matches and the final will take place on July 27, as the International Olympics Committee (IOC) rules stipulate that no medals are awarded and no athletes are eliminated before the opening ceremony.
