Patrice Motsepe re-elected for another four year term as CAF president

South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has secured another four-year term as Confederation of African Football (CAF) President following his unopposed re-election during the 14th Extraordinary Summit in Egypt.

Motsepe, was first elected in 2021, also unopposed, with the backing of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He succeeded Ahmad Ahmad, who was banned for corruption.

The businessman, who also owns South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, had announced his bid for re-election in October 2024, during the CAF General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to Forbes, Motsepe is ranked South Africa’s third-richest man, with extensive investments across various industries.

Eto’o Elected to CAF Executive Committee

Former Cameroon international and Cameroon Football Federation President, Samuel Eto’o, was also elected unopposed as the Central African representative on the CAF Executive Committee.

Eto’o’s election comes just days after winning an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), overturning his earlier exclusion by CAF’s Governance Committee.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker has faced controversy in recent years, including: A FIFA ban in September 2024 for verbally abusing match officials at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and another six-month ban from attending Cameroon national team matches.

Motsepe has prioritized Expanding African football investments and sponsorships, Improving continental club competitions, Strengthening grassroots football development and Ensuring transparency and good governance.

His re-election means continuity in the ongoing transformation of African football, with CAF focusing on financial growth, structural reforms, and competitive excellence.
