Paul Makenzie charged with murder of 191 minors

The chief suspect in the Shakahola massacre, Paul Nthenge Makenzie was today charged before the Malindi High Court with the murder of 191 children.

Some of the murdered children were identified by name, while others were named by initials since they were unidentified by investigators.

Mackenzie had ordered his followers to starve themselves and their children to death so that they could go to heaven.

The accused allegedly committed the offences on unknown date between January 2021 and September 2023 at Shakahola area of Malindi Sub County within Kilifi County.

They pleaded not guilty to the 191 counts of murder before court.

The prosecution team led by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions(ODPP) Victor Mule informed Lady Justice Mugure Thande that 30 out of 31 suspects were found fit to stand trial after undergoing mental assessment.

The Physiatrist assesment revealed that the 4th accused person, Evans Kolombe Sirya, is unfit to take a murder plea.

The prosecution applied for 30 days for him to undergo a second mental test before deciding his fate- this was posted ODPP official X account.
