Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca faces a nine-month suspension following a heated confrontation with referee Benoit Millot during Lyon’s 2-1 win over Brest in Ligue 1. The French Professional Football League (FLP) imposed the ban after the altercation left the official visibly shaken.
Furious Altercation
The incident occurred in the dying minutes of the match when Fonseca squared up to Millot, screaming in his face after being sent off. The referee claimed Fonseca attempted a headbutt, describing the manager’s actions as intimidating. Millot told L’Equipe, “He jumped at me with an intimidating attitude… There seemed to be a slight contact of the nose.”
FLP’s Verdict
The FLP announced the suspension on Wednesday March 5, 2025, barring Fonseca from the touchline until November 30. Additionally, he is prohibited from entering the dressing room before and after matches until September 15. The punishment applies only to domestic competitions, but UEFA and FIFA could extend the ban to European tournaments.
Unstable Season
Fonseca joined Lyon on January 31 after AC Milan dismissed him a month earlier. His suspension coincided with his 52nd birthday, adding to a turbulent year. Despite the controversy, Lyon will still have Fonseca on the sidelines in their Europa League last-16 clash against Steaua Bucharest.
Potential Appeal
The suspension delivers a blow to Lyon’s campaign. The club has yet to confirm whether they will appeal the decision. If the case reaches UEFA or FIFA, the consequences could impact Lyon’s European ambitions.
Fonseca’s actions highlight the tension between coaches and referees, prompting renewed calls for respect and discipline in football.
