Kenya men’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa faced a tough defeat against Fiji, losing 21-14 in their second pool match at the ongoing Perth 7s taking place at the HBF Park in Australia.
Nygel Amaitsa and Samuel Asati each contributed a try for Kenya, but it was not enough to secure a victory.
After a disappointing start to the tournament with a 29-14 loss to New Zealand, Shujaa began the game with determination. Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring for Kenya just minutes into the match, successfully converting to give his team a 7-0 lead.
Samuel Asati soon added to the tally with another try, and Amaitsa’s conversion extended Kenya’s lead to 14-0. However, Fiji responded with their first try from Joji Nasova, narrowing the gap to 14-7 by halftime.
The second half saw Fiji pick up where they left off, with Joseva Talacolo scoring a try that Lowane Teba converted, leveling the score at 14-14. A defensive lapse from Shujaa allowed Joji Nasova to cross the line again for Fiji, securing a converted try that sealed the match at 21-14.
This loss marked Kenya’s second in the tournament, following their earlier defeat to New Zealand, putting them in a precarious position regarding quarterfinal qualification.
Shujaa will conclude their pool phase on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 7:00 AM, facing Uruguay, who have won both of their matches against Fiji and New Zealand.
