The nominee for Kenya’s ambassadorial position to the Democratic Republic of Congo and outgoing Principal Secretary for the State Department for Sports, Eng. Peter Tum, officially handed over his role to his successor, Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, in a ceremony held at Talanta Plaza, Nairobi.
The event, attended by Cabinet Secretary Hon. Salim Mvurya and senior officials from the Ministry of Sports, marked a significant transition in leadership. Eng. Tum’s tenure was defined by transformative achievements aimed at advancing Kenya’s sports sector.
“Serving as Principal Secretary for Sports has been a deeply fulfilling journey, one marked by milestones that I take immense pride in,” said Eng. Tum.

Among his notable accomplishments was coordinating Kenya’s successful joint bid with Uganda and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a historic milestone for East Africa.
The tournament is expected to boost regional integration and tourism while showcasing enhanced sports infrastructure across the three nations.
Tum also spearheaded Kenya’s most ambitious stadium development program in decades, overseeing renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums and completing long-stalled projects such as Kirigiti and Bukhungu stadiums.

Additionally, he played a key role in strengthening anti-doping measures, improving sports governance, and launching nationwide sports academies to nurture young talent.
His efforts in promoting athlete welfare and gender inclusion have left a lasting impact on the sector. As he prepares for his new role as Kenya’s Ambassador to the DRC (pending parliamentary approval), Tum expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their support in shaping Kenyan sports.

PS Elijah Mwangi, who takes over the docket with confidence from CS Mvurya, is expected to build on these achievements.
“I warmly welcomed PS Elijah Mwangi, expressing confidence in his leadership. I encouraged him to collaborate with heads of Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) and departments to ensure compliance among federations, efficiency in infrastructure development, talent harnessing through academies, and the well-being of our sportsmen and women,” said CS Mvurya.
Mwangi has been urged to prioritize compliance among sports federations, talent development through academies, and infrastructure efficiency, while ensuring athlete welfare remains central to policy implementation.
