Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, July 21 visited ailing veteran Gikuyu musician Paul Mutonga alias Wanganangu at his home in Muchatha villagem, Kiambaa.
Gachagua revealed that he met the legendary musician while he was serving as a District Officer in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, between 1993 and 1996.
The second in command said that he was glued to his music which centred around tradition and culture.
“I loved and enjoyed — which I still do — his creatively, carefully composed songs, which truly remain highly educative, entertaining and informative,” Gachagua said. “Wanganangu was a common feature at our functions and guests were thoroughly entertained by this gifted musician, whose unique and distinct rendition was no match in his genre.
During the visit, Gachagua was taken aback by the “golden voice and highly infectious smile” the 95-year-old still possesses. “It was thrilling listening to him again as he belted some of his great and remarkable songs.”
“We thank God for Wanganangu and continue to pray that He grants him long life. It is important to always remember, cherish and value our heroes such Wanganangu because in their artistry, we promote and preserve our culture and traditions,” he added.
Gachagua was accompanied by several leaders including; Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, MPs Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Samuel Parashina (Kajiado South), Benjamin Gathiru Mejjadonk (Embakasi Central) and MCAs led by Muchatha Ward Representative Karanja Kamau (KK).
