The body of Pope Francis arrived at Saint Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23 morning, where it will lie in state ahead of his funeral scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
Tens of thousands have gathered at St. Peter’s Square to pay their respects to the beloved Argentine pontiff, who died on Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke, coma and heart failure.
At precisely 10:00 a.m., the solemn procession began as the basilica’s bells tolled. The pope’s simple wooden coffin, open and unadorned, was carried the 500-meter journey from the Casa Santa Marta—his humble residence and place of death—by a team of pallbearers.
Dozens of red-robed cardinals led the way, followed closely by eight Swiss Guards in ceremonial attire walking beside the coffin. A long line of clergy, some holding candles, and groups of nuns followed in prayerful silence as the cortege made its way through the square.
