President William Ruto on Tuesday met the steering committee on the regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers Basin at State House Nairobi.
The committee reported that the programme is progressing well and has hired 20,000 young people a month, 10,000 every fortnight since it began in October 2024.
Loads of garbage have been cleared in 75km of the 94km-stretch of the Nairobi, Ngong and Mathare rivers.
Additionally, 69km of the basin has been unclogged and 56km levelled. To conserve the rivers’ basin, 272,000 seedlings have been planted and 268 tree nurseries established.
Meanwhile, the President also held a meeting with Nairobi MPs and briefed them on the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration programme. Saying Nairobi is not only the face of Kenya, but also the gateway to the East African region, he explained it occupies a special place in the National Government’s plans.
The meeting also discussed the need to accelerate the building of 5,000 classrooms in Nairobi and lighting the city to allow more hours for business and boost security.
At the meeting were Governor Johnson Sakaja, Nairobi Members of Parliament (MPs), Nairobi Rivers Commission Chairperson Margaret Wanjiru and government officials.
