Plane carrying Malawi vice president, 9 others goes missing

A military plane carrying Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing.

A statement from the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba says that the Malawi Defense Forces (MDF) aircraft left Lilongwe on Monday, June 10 at 9:17 am, but failed to make its scheduled landing at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02 am.

“All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far,” the statement reads in part.

MDF Commander General Valentino Phiri has since informed Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera of the incident.

Consequently, President Chakwera has cancelled all his scheduled travels. Chakwera was scheduled to departure for the Bahamas.

The head of state has also ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the aircraft.

“The public will be updated of any developments on the situation as facts are established,” the statement adds.
