Police arrest 204 suspects over theft and destruction of property during protests in Nairobi

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has disclosed that several suspects were arrested in Nairobi and other parts of the country over theft and destruction of property during anti-government protests.

In a statement on Tuesday July 2, 2024, DCI noted that security forces across the country singled out suspects found engaging in criminal activities in the guise of protesting, and took them to custody.

“In Nairobi and its environs, 204 suspects were apprehended, 35 in the Coastal region, 18 in Nyanza and 11 and 4 in Rift Valley and Eastern regions respectively,” DCI reported.

The DCI has further deployed investigators across the affected regions to pursue suspects captured on CCTV cameras and mobile phone recordings violently robbing, stealing and destroying properties and businesses of innocent citizens.

According to the DCI, the culprits shall bear the consequences of their actions individually in the corridors of justice.

At the same time, the government agency assured all Kenyans that the processes involved in the investigations conform to the demands of the criminal justice system.

“Meanwhile, we appeal to property and business owners whose premises are installed with CCTV cameras, and which may have captured criminal activities being perpetuated, to grant access to our Imaging and Acoustic Unit detectives to retrieve the footages in the pursuit of justice to the affected persons,” DCI noted.

Further, police urged individuals with useful footage in their gadgets to volunteer and forward them to any DCI offices across the country, and help fellow Kenyans get justice for their woes.

DCI released a statement after anti-government protests in Nairobi and other parts of the country that were characterized by looting of businesses.
