Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested 38 suspects linked to a spate of robberies targeting pedestrians and motorists along major Nairobi highways during President William Ruto’s tours of the city.
In a statement on Saturday March 15, 2025, the DCI reported that the suspects were arrested along Thika Highway, Waiyaki way and Jogoo Road.
“In light of the recent attacks targeting innocent members of the public along Thika Highway, Waiyaki way and Jogoo Road, police officers have taken swift action to hold the perpetrators accountable,” read part of the DCI statement.
“A total of 38 suspects have been apprehended and are currently in police custody undergoing processing at various police stations as they await their court appearance.”
During the crackdown, seven motorcycles used in terrorizing members of the public and several mobile phones were recovered and are securely detained as exhibits.
The suspects are set to be arraigned on Monday March 17, 2025, where they will face various charges, including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony and obstruction.
Meanwhile, the DCI reported that Police officers are steadfast in their efforts to identify and apprehend additional suspects behind the attacks.
The arrests come a few days after the city experienced unrest and a spike in criminal activity following the president’s rally in Mathare on March 11.
Groups of youths engaged in widespread looting and vandalism along major roads, including Thika Road, Juja Road, and Outering Road. Motorists and businesses were targeted, leading to panic and disruption.
Images and videos released online showed motorists being attacked while in a matatu, while others in personal cars.
The chaos began shortly after the president’s speech in Mathare. As his convoy departed, groups of youths blocked sections of Thika Road near the National Youth Service headquarters and the Kariobangi Roundabout.
They smashed car windows and forcibly snatched valuables from passengers. The unrest quickly spread to Juja Road and Outering Road, disrupting transport and commercial activities.
Similar incidents were reported after Ruto’s tour of the Eastlands on Friday. Kenyans along Jogoo Road reported being mugged, their bags and belongings being snatched when they encountered the rowdy youth.
