Police arrest 4 suspects of mobile phone stealing, hacking; 76 stolen phones recovered

Police in Mpeketoni, Lamu West Constituency, have arrested four suspects believed to be part of a gang that has been stealing phones from residents in the area.

Authorities say that apart from stealing, members of the gang have also been hacking and tempering with the phones.

Accompanied by M-Kopa Police Liaison and staff, the officers from Mpeketoni Police Station acted on intelligence from members of the public to stage raids in different shops within the township.

The raids, conducted on Wednesday, June 5 at around 1 pm, led to the arrest of the four suspects and recovery of 76 assorted mobile phones believed to be stolen property.

Paul Kinyua Katiuki, Sidi Joyce Shida, Eliud Ng’ang’a and John Mutembe were arrested when officers from Mpeketoni Police Station acted on intelligence to raid several electronic shops in Mpeketoni township.

Paul Kinyua Katiuki and Sidi Joyce Shida were arrested at Dan Computerized Repair Shop. A total of 46 assorted phones (13 being M-Kopa phones), flashing tools (UFI, Z3X), Dongles and four hard drives.

Eliud Ng’ang’a, 42, was arrested at High-Tech Electronics Repair Shop, with authorities recovering 13 assorted mobile phones, miracle box (flashing tool), and three hard drives.

The last suspect John Mutembe, 24, was nabbed at JM Phones Repair Shop. The officers recovered 17 assorted mobile phones (9 being M-Kopa phones), two laptops and a hard drive.

The suspects are in police custody even as investigations continue.
