Police arrest notorious suspects for stealing from Mpesa agents

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two key suspects involved in stealing cash from Mpesa agents in the country.

The two were arrested on Saturday January 27, during a security operation in Embu where the suspects were swapping sim cards and stealing huge sums of money from victims.

“Their resolute pursuit and subsequent apprehension was launched after intelligence leads pointed to a con double, who had on Jan 18, 2023 advanced their didoes to Kithimu trading centre while posing as Safaricom agents.”

“They picked on a target, a 49-year-old male Mpesa operator, somehow convincing him to have them replace his till number and in the process obtained his confidential details,” DCI noted in a statement.

Using his details, they installed a safaricom app in their mobile phone and withdrew Sh24,000 from the till number.

Evans Ngui Dorcas, and Jackline Mwende were trailed to Ngariama area where they were arrested and escorted to Itabua Police Station. 

The suspects are being held at the police station as officers continue with the crackdown to hunt down more accomplices.

At the same time, Embu County DCI head cautioned Mpesa operators and other businesspersons of numerous fraudsters roaming in the region guised as agents of reputable companies.

He also warned culprits to mend their ways before maximum force of the law is unleashed on them.

In a separate incident, police on Saturday January 27, recovered several stolen cars and arrested suspects involved in stealing of the vehicles. 

In a statement posted on X account, DCI noted that the car theft suspects were arrested in Nairobi, Nyeri and Nakuru Counties.

“After interrogation on the notorious motor vehicle theft suspects arrested yesterday in Nairobi and Nyeri counties, DCI sleuths deployed to bring to their knees all syndicates implicated in the vice proceeded to Nakuru county in a bid to effect more accomplices and recover stolen motor vehicles,” DCI noted. 

At 58 suburb area of Nakuru city, they pounced on Michael Gichuhi Macharia who was in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle make Toyota Vitz registration number KCW 582Q believed to have been stolen from a Nairobi city dweller.

The officers ambushed a second renowned suspect, Charles Kung’u Kamau, driving a numberless vehicle, Toyota Probox silver in colour.

Search from its Chassis revealed its registration as KBV 958J. Kung’u managed to escape leaving the vehicle, but efforts are on high gear to have him in police custody.
