Police base commander drowns after his car was swept away by floods in Machakos

A police base commander drowned  on Wednesday May 1, 2024 after the car he was driving was swept away by flooded River Kware in Matungulu, Machakos County.

The incident was reported at KBC Police Station by members of the public who had spotted a vehicle submerged in River Kware on Wednesday at around 4.30pm.

“It was reported by members of the republic at 1630hrs that there was a vehicle submerged in River Kware,” read part of the police report.

Police officers visited the scene and retrieved the body of Cyprian Walunya Kasili, base commander, Ruai who had been swept away and drowned in his car.

The senior police officer drowned as he was driving back to his home in Lowland estate within Kware area.

Meanwhile, the vehicle of the victim is still submerged in the river but rescue teams are at the scene to ensure it is removed.

The body was retrieved and moved to Patjud funeral home, awaiting autopsy.

Official statistics from the government indicate that the death toll from heavy rains and floods in the country has reached 188 while 90 persons are still missing.

The government is currently assessing all dams in the country as officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) join the rescue operation in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.
