Police have arrested two main suspects in the murder of athlete Benjamin Kiplagat

Police in Eldoret have apprehended two suspects who are believed to be linked to the murder of Kenyan born- Ugandan athlete Edward Kiplagat also referred to as Benjamin.

Kiplagat was on Sunday morning found dead inside a car with stab wounds on his neck according to the police.

While confirming the arrest, Moiben Sub-county Police Commander Stephen Okal, said they relied on CCTV footage obtained from the scene of crime and other technical clues to pursue and arrest the suspects.

While the motive of the killing was still unknown, police said investigations had shown that Kiplagat had been “waylaid” by the two men before he hit their motorcycle with his car.

The athletes mobile phone and cash were not on his person when his body was discovered.

Police say they have cast a wider net in bid to arrest anyone else involved in the killing of Kiplagat.

Kiplagat won the 2008 World Junior 3,000m steeplechase silver medal at 8:19.24 behind Kenyan Jonathan Ndiku Muia with 8:17.28 and Kenyan Patrick Kipyegon Terer settling for bronze in 8:25.14.

The two suspects will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
