Police officers on Thursday August 8, 2024 lobbed teargas to disperse a crowd of protesters that was gathering in Nairobi’s CBD for the ‘Nane Nane march’.
Several businesses had remained closed within the CBD on Thursday morning in anticipation of the planned protests.
At the same time, the usual morning traffic jam was not witnessed in some parts of the city on Thursday morning as most city dwellers opted to stay away.
For instance, major routes such as Thika Road, Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road had no traffic jams.
Meanwhile, all roads leading to State House were barricaded with heavy police presence, as President William Ruto presided over the swearing in of 19 cabinet secretaries nominees.
Roadblocks have been erected around other protected areas in the city including Parliament buildings, signaling heightened security measures.
