A police officer based at Karatu Police Station in Gatundu South, Kiambu County is being held over suspicious loss of his AK47 firearm.
Police Constable Benson Otenda is said to have left the station on Tuesday morning at around 6:05am. He had just completed his night shift and handed over to Police Constable Leonard Kimani.
Instead of returning his AK47 under registration 5524595 to the armoury, he opted to carry it home.
The officer reportedly placed the rifle beside his bed and fell asleep.
Upon waking up at around 10am, he discovered the firearm, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition 7.62 special mm was missing.
Otenda immediately filed a report at the station. The scene was visited by CIPU commander, SCCIO and OCS Gatundu south.
The sub county team was later joined by County security team comprising the CPC, CIPU and CCIO.
A search team was set up in efforts to recover the firearm, while the officer was placed in custody pending completion of investigations into the incident.
