Police officers who attacked Journalists and Students over Butere Girls’ play to face punishment

The National Police Service (NPS) has pledged swift action against officers implicated in the assault of journalists and students during a standoff at the National Drama Festivals in Nakuru this week.

Chaos erupted on Wednesday and Thursday when police reportedly used tear gas and force to block the writer of Echoes of War.

A play by Butere Girls High School, from entering Kirobon Girls High School the festival’s venue.

The confrontation left several students and journalists injured.

NPS condemns the violence

In a strongly worded statement, the NPS condemned the conduct of the officers involved, terming it “unprofessional and unacceptable.”

“Any officer found in breach of these standards will face disciplinary action in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

“Obstruction, intimidation, harassment or interference with journalists performing their duties will not be tolerated.”

The incident has sparked a nationwide uproar, with political leaders, human rights groups and the public accusing the state of clamping down on artistic expression.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna criticized the government’s handling of the situation, calling it a threat to constitutional freedoms.

Amnesty International speaks out

The country has watched with disbelief as the state seemingly runs scared of a school play, he said. “This is not just censorship—it’s fear masquerading as authority.”

Amnesty International Kenya echoed the outrage, calling the police response unlawful and deeply troubling.

By targeting a school play performed by children, the state is criminalizing creativity,” Amnesty said.

“This attack undermines children’s right to participate in society through art.”

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an independent investigation, assuring the public of accountability.

If any officer is found criminally responsible, IPOA will recommend prosecution or disciplinary action, it said in a statement.
