Police in Narok East are investigating an incident that left a police officer badly injured after a confrontation with locals who were protesting the killing of more than 20 sheep in the area.
It is reported that on Thursday, January 16 evening at around 6:20 pm, a non-injury car accident occurred at Duka Moja area along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Road.
According to a report filed at Nairegia Enkare Police Station, the accident led to the killing of about 25 sheep belonging to one Philip Suntai.
On Friday, January 17 morning, a group of about 2,000 locals mobilised themselves and barricaded the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu Highway at around 11 am. The group was demanding for the compensation of the killed sheep.
Officers from the police station, led by Narok East Sub-County Police Commander Samson Thuranira, arrived to the scene to established that the locals were “riotously” demanding for the compensation of their killed animals.
“The officers tried to calm the crowd but declined hence became more unruly with continuous screams and denial to unblock the road,” the police report seen by TV47 Digital reads in part.
Consequently, the officers were forced to fire ten rounds of blank and ten teargas cannister to disperse the rowdy crowd.
“In the process several officers were injured, one was cut off his arm and lost a firearm,” the report adds.
