Police report: Drowning incidents due to heavy rains in Kenya

Several people have lost their lives by drowning in different parts of the country as a result of heavy rains, according to the latest police report.

The heavy rains has caused flooding thus being a threat to human life .

A lot of people have been left homeless and others lost their lives after being carried away by floods.

The heavy rains has not only caused damage of buildings and infrastructure , but also disruption of transport and communications networks.

The disruption of transport has also affected the reopening of schools. This is after Education cabinet secretary Ezekiel Machogu postponed the opening date for another week due to the heavy rains.

In areas of the lift valley, for example Narok , farmers are incurring losses after their livestock were carried away by floods.

Drowning cases have been reported in several parts of the country including Makueni, Nandi, Trans-Nzoia, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, and Narok counties.

For instance, in Makueni county, Nzau Sub County , a drowning incident was reported on 30th April,2024 at Emali police station after a body was spotted submerged at Kikuu River in Mii Sub Location.

The body of the 32-year-old man was retrieved from from the river, after the victim was reported missing on 27th, April 2024 at Kalamba Police station.

In Nandi county ,two drowning cases were reported at Kapsabet police station and Kipkaren salient police station.

This was after a male herder aged 30, who was in company of others at around 1100hrs drowned when crossing the river. The body has not been recovered yet.

The second incident happened around 1530hrs where a grade 8 pupil at St. Brigitta junior secondary aged 17 years went to take a bath but slid into a river and was swept away by the water.

In Tran-Nzoia county , a drowning incident was reported at Cherangany police station.

In Narok county , 2 drowning cases were reported at Torokiat police station and Mulot police station.

A man aged 42 years, a resident of Torokiat village was crossing Michigilwet seasonal river and accidentally slipped off and drowned.

The second incident was at Ngasiat river where police officers from Mulot police station visited the scene and found a decomposing body of a male juvenile aged one and half year swept away on Sunday.

In Bomet county , a drowning incident was reported at Sotik police station on 30th April 2024 after a body of unknown person was seen floating at Kipsonoi river.

In Uasin Gishu County an incident was reported at Huruma police station where 2 boys from Huruma Sub Location, roadblock Village went to swim at River Sosiani but unfortunately they were swept by raging water.
