Police report: Drowning incidents in the past 24 hours

Police on Wednesday May 8, 2024 released a detailed report on drowning incidents reported in the past 24 hours in the country as a result of heavy rains.

For instance in Mandera County a drowning incident was reported in Bur John village, where a 13-year-old girl, Mumina Ibrahim Abdi was carried away by floods.

The incident occurred at 0500hrs and extensive search efforts led to the discovery of her body at the banks of River Lagga.

In accordance with Islamic traditions, her body was then prepared for the burial ceremony, allowing the community to pay their final respects. 

Elsewhere in Kirinyaga County, a drowning incident occurred after a vehicle plunged into River Sagana on May 6.

The incident prompted concerted efforts by officers from the disaster response, battalion of the Kenya Defense Forces and the local authorities to recover the vehicle and the body of the victim. 

The rescue efforts began at 0730hrs on 7 May, 2024 the day following after the tragedy and continued to1530hrs. 

The high speed of water at the Sagana River however proved to be a big challenge for the rescuers, forcing them to temporarily suspend their operations. 

In Bomet County, a child aged 1 year and 3 months drowned in Kipturgut village after he tumbled into a pit filled with water that was at their home.

Efforts were made to rescue the baby, and was immediately taken to the nearby Chebuonyo clinic, but his situation proved to be critical and he was later transferred to the Kapkatet County Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Elsewhere in Baringo County, a body of a 77 year-old man was found floating at Sossion River.

Police retrieved the body and it was taken to Baringo County Referral Hospital pending a post mortem examination.
