Police stoned to death during raid at illicit brew den in Rarieda

A police inspector was on Wednesday, March 13 evening stoned to death by rowdy youth during a crackdown on illicit alcohol in Rarieda, Siaya County.

Simon Mwangi Kariuki reportedly left Ndori Police Station in the company of his colleague, Police Constable Wilfred Maina at around 7 pm, on a mission to raid illicit brew dens at Oyude Market.

According to a police report, the two officers were acting on a tip-off that one Caren Okumu alias Nyaseme was in possession of illicit alcohol.

“On arrival, the officers arrested [Nyaseme] with 21 sachets of 100ml each and 4 packets of Supermatch cigarettes for export,” the police report reads in part.

However, the suspect is said to have raised alarm, prompting a group of rowdy youth to respond.

“They accosted the officers by pelting them with crude weapons thereby fatally injuring the Inspector and PC Wilfred Maina managed to escape with injuries on his right shoulder,” the report adds.

Police say that the youth also stole the inspector’s Czeska Pistol with unknown number of bullets when he fired shots in the air to scare them away.

The scene was visited by the Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo.

The body was removed to Lwak Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Nyaseme has since been arrested and she is assisting the police with their investigations.

Meanwhile, the search for the missing firearm and hunt for more suspects continues.
