Police uniform changes: SC Ahmednasir Abdullahi terms move ‘very silly’

Senior Counsel (SC) Ahmednasir Abdullahi has weighed in on proposed police uniform debate, terming it a ‘very silly’ move.

Abdullahi shared his sentiments on social media Tuesday evening after National Police Service (NPS) invited Kenyans to give feedback on the new design.

“This is VERY SILLY. Every 5 years, we have a change in the colour of Police uniform so that an inflated tender is EATEN…This type of EATING isn’t even that smart!” he opined.

Public Participation

While showcasing the light blue shirts and navy blue trousers, NPS announced they would collect views from Kenyans on diverse dates.

In Nairobi, public participation was carried out on Tuesday, August 29 at Kenya Police Pavilion in South C.

The exercise continues today (Wednesday) at Ruring’u Police Training College within Nyeri, Central region.

It will come to a close on Thursday, August 31 at National Police College-Main Campus Kiganjo.

Uhuru’s Police Reforms

The then Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i effected changes in police uniform for general duty police officers in 2018.

It followed a raft of reforms introduced in the police service by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This saw the officers transition to Persian blue shirt/trousers as the light blue shirt/blouse and navy blue pair of trousers were phased out over time.

During their campaigns in June 2022, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assured Kenyans that they would revoke the blue police uniform as they bring in reforms.

The move therefore appears to be in line with Kenya Kwanza’s promise to Kenyans. However, some people smell corruption in the matter.
