Police in Mombasa on Monday December 30, 2024 dispersed young people and human rights activists who had come together for anti-abduction protests at Uhuru Gardens.
According to the county police commander Peter Kimani, the demonstration was unlawful.
Kimani stated that their were no abductions in Mombasa, as he advised those interested in the protests to go protest in Nairobi.
“Is there an abduction in Mombasa? Then why are you protesting here in Mombasa? You should go demonstrate in Nairobi. Show me the permit,” he stated.
Even though the organizers claimed that Uhuru Gardens was a public space where everyone had the right to gather, the police commander instructed his officers, to remove the youth from the area.
Meanwhile, in Nairobi, numerous Kenyans assembled in different areas of the CBD, holding placards with messages criticizing the Kenya Kwanza government.
