Pope Francis faces respiratory setback amid ongoing health challenges

Vatican confirms severe respiratory crises

Pope Francis, 88, has suffered two acute respiratory crises due to mucus accumulation, according to a statement from the Vatican.

The medical incidents occurred on Monday March 4, 2025, prompting doctors to perform bronchoscopies and resume non-invasive ventilation to aid his breathing.

Despite these health complications, the pontiff remains alert and continues to follow global affairs closely.

“Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.

Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, with the need to remove large secretions.

In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times. The prognosis remains guarded,” the statement read.

Hospitalization and worsening condition

The Pope was initially admitted to the hospital on February 14 after his prolonged battle with bronchitis took a turn for the worse.

His condition deteriorated over time, leading to a bronchospasm episode last Friday.

Though that particular episode was severe, Vatican officials noted that Monday’s crises, while still concerning, were comparatively less dangerous.

Medical intervention and treatment

Doctors responded swiftly to the respiratory distress by conducting bronchoscopies, a procedure used to clear mucus from the airways and assess lung function.

In addition, non-invasive ventilation was reinstated to assist his breathing.

These measures aim to stabilize his condition and prevent further complications.

Papal resilience and ongoing engagement

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis remains mentally active, receiving briefings on global events and maintaining communication with Vatican officials.

“I would like to thank you for your prayers, which rise up to the Lord from the hearts of so many faithful from many parts of the world.

I feel all your affection and closeness and, at this particular time, I feel as if I am ‘carried’ and supported by all God’s people.” Pope Francis expressed gratitude through his X (formerly Twitter) account.

His resilience has been evident in past health challenges, and his commitment to his role remains unwavering.
