Pope Francis has suffered his second fall in six weeks and bruised his forearm, the Vatican reported on Thursday, January 16.
The 88-year-old fell at the Santa Marta residence where he lives in the Vatican, with the Holy See Press Office saying that he did not break any bones.
“This morning, due to a fall at Santa Marta, Pope Francis sustained a bruise on his right forearm, with no fractures,” the office said in a statement.
Despite the incident, Pope Francis continued with his scheduled audiences, including a meeting with Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile, Chair of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).
Images from the meeting showed Pope Francis — who has been in increasingly fragile health in recent years — using a cloth sling, wrapped around his neck, to hold up his right arm.
The pontiff, who has led the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church since 2013, has been using a cane of a wheelchair for mobility because of knee and back pain.
In December, the Argentine slipped while getting out of bed and hit his chin on his bedside table, sporting a large bruise on his right jaw.
In the past two years, Pope Francis has been suffering recurring health issues.
