Preparations are in top gear for the 14th EAC Inter Parliamentary games

A Joint Planning Committee led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega recently toured various venues in Mombasa, including KPA Mbaraki Sports Club, Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa Sports Club, Nyali Golf, Shanzu Teachers Training College, Sheikh Zayed, KPA Highlife, and the Mombasa ASK Showground.

The visit was part of the preparations to assess the readiness of these facilities to host the 14th edition of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, scheduled for December 6th to 18th.

The games are expected to bring over 1,500 legislators and assembly personnel to Mombasa, Kenya, fostering cohesion and unity within the EAC region. During the inspection, EALA MP Kanini Kega noted that preparations are at an advanced stage.

“We are here as a preparatory team to check on Kenya’s preparedness to host the 14th International Parliamentary Games in Mombasa.

“This is a rotational event; last year, we were in Kigali, Rwanda, and the performance was superb. The essence of these inter-parliamentary games is not just about competition, but about integrating our people.

“We are one community within the EAC, and there’s no better way to integrate our people than through sports,” said Kega.

He added that parliaments from all eight EAC member states, including Somalia, will participate in athletics, football, basketball, tug of war, PWD darts, and golf.

Kega acknowledged that while there is a desire to include more sports disciplines, current cash flow challenges facing many countries mean the games will remain the same, with more events planned for future editions.

“At the moment, the games we are participating in are sufficient, but we still believe they should accommodate more participants,” added the EALA MP.

National Assembly Bunge Sports Club Chairman Vincent Musyoka emphasized the goal of making the Kenya edition memorable. He also highlighted the need for timely renovations of playgrounds and facilities, noting that improvements should be made well in advance of hosting events.

Security during the games will be provided by the Mombasa County Inspectorate in collaboration with the National Police Service.
