President Kagame endorses Raila Odinga for AU chairman job

Rwanda President Paul Kagame has shown his support to Raila Odinga for his bid in the African Union Commission chairman job.

President Kagame expressed his support for Mr. Odinga’s candidacy while on an interview with NTV, stating his desire for the Kenyan opposition leader to secure the position.

“I respect Raila Odinga, I know his struggles, he did a good job and we give him support,” he said.

He also commended Raila’s work as AU’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development in 2018 at the same time Kagame was the chairman.

Kagame’s endorsement comes in after Raila’s visit to Rwanda to seek support for AU’s top job.

He also assured Raila that Rwanda will support him fully.

“Not only will we support him to be there, but also when he is there, we will support him for Africa to succeed,” Kagame added.

President William Ruto on Tuesday March 5, 2024 disclosed that East African leaders had unanimously agreed to support Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union AU Commission chairperson role.

Uganda President Yoweri Museveni, Salva Kiir of South Sudan and Samia Suluhu of Tanzania are among the Presidents who have pledged to give Raila their votes.
