President Museveni’s party says he already has 4.8 million votes ahead of 2026 elections

Chairman of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party electoral commission Tanga Odoi has revealed that President Yoweri Museveni has secured 4.8 million votes ahead of 2026 elections.

Odoi stated that NRM leaders and delegates have already secured the 4.8 million votes to ensure President Museveni retains power in the 2026 elections.

Speaking on Thursday, November 30, during a press briefing, Tanga expressed optimism that President Museveni will emerge as the winner in the 2026 presidential elections.

“At the end of our structure elections, we vote in 2.5 million from the village to national level.

“Then we add flag bearers of members of parliament, LCIII, LCIV, LCV, flag bearer of leaders in CEC, and ultimately the total number is 4.8 million leaders.

“That alone means that the NRM presidential flag bearer has 4.8 million votes,” said Tanga.

At the same time, different groups within the ruling party have already endorsed President Museveni to defend his seat in the next elections.

NRM has also released structures for party elections from the village level to the district level.

The NRM politician also noted that the party has rolled out a massive membership registration across all villages in the country in an exercise that ends on February 29, 2024.

“We are not about to give them power because they are divided, we are on our course as NRM,” stated Tanga.

However, President Museveni was declared winner in the 2021 elections after getting 5,851, 037 votes representing 58.6 of the valid 9,978,093 cast votes. 

He has ruled Uganda since 1986, after getting power through guerilla warfare.
