President Ruto announces deal for 250,000 jobs for Kenyans in Germany

President William Ruto has announced that a deal to ensure 250,000 Kenyans get jobs in Germany will be ready by June 2024.

Speaking during a joint national executive retreat and parliamentary group consultative meeting in Naivasha on Monday February 19, 2024 Ruto said that the government was putting measures in place to ensure 250,000 Kenyans  secure professional, skilled and semi-skilled jobs in Germany.

The president  explained that Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Roseline Njogu, is making efforts to ensure the deal is finalized in the next four months.

“Roseline just came back from Germany. We are almost completing the agreement with the German government because they have asked us for 250,000 job opportunities and they want us to conclude the agreement before June. The same thing is going on with different countries,” said Ruto.

He at the same time urged Kenya Kwanza government officials and legislators to help in ensuring Kenyans get jobs both locally and internationally.

“There are jobs out there, there are young people all over the place. We need to connect them to the opportunities. Any serious leader will listen to what I have said and do something about it,” Ruto noted.

The Head of State decried the low number of Kenyan nurses being sent to Saudi Arabia, noting that out of the 2,500 that were required only 500 have traveled for the jobs.

On the other hand, the Kenya Kwanza MPs told President Ruto that they were not informed of job opportunities negotiated by the government abroad.

“Nobody has told us,” one of the MPs told Ruto, who was surprised.

Consequently, the President told the legislators that the jobs were advertised in newspapers and he had also been talking about the job opportunities during political rallies and meetings.

“I have heard some of you say you are not aware! Where do you want me to stand to tell you, which volume do you want so that you can hear?” Ruto said.

“They were advertised in the press, I have talked about this thing in every meeting. When you are seated in those meetings, after that aren’t you supposed to find out where these vacancies are?”

At the same time, Ruto criticised the elected leaders for bothering him about creating jobs for those who lost elections, instead of considering millions of jobless youth.
