President William Ruto has blamed the spread of fake news as one of the major reasons for the growing criticism against his Kenya Kwanza government.
Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2024 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, President Ruto noted that he is open to criticism from Kenyans, as long as it is based on facts.
“Jamhuri Day is also a moment for Kenyans to expose the fake news aimed at discrediting our ambition, sabotaging our hope and seeking to dampen our resolve,” said president Ruto.
“We encourage everyone, including our critics, to engage on the basis of facts and the truth,” he added.
President Ruto’s remarks emerged at a time when he was facing sharp criticism on social media platforms.
“I have no problem with discourse, criticism and alternative proposals. In fact, I welcome them and listen to feedback in order to learn, improve and become better,” said Ruto.
At the same time, the president urged citizens to use social media responsibly, as he warned against the use of digital platforms to spread false information.
“We are at the stage in social development when digital technologies have immense capacity to amplify disinformation, magnify fake news and distort facts beyond all recognition,” he explained.
According to the Head of State, the spread of fake news promotes negativity, sabotages development, and undermines democracy in the country.
Meanwhile, Ruto argued that despite the criticism he receives, the cost of living has gone down, farmers are more productive and Kenyans are receiving better services through Taifa Care.
“When we say that the cost of basic food commodities has come down, it is a fact. When we say that inflation has gone down, it is a fact.
“When we say that our farmers are producing more and better, it is a fact, and when we say that Kenyans who have registered for Taifa Care are receiving better services than before, it is a fact,” he stated.
This comes a few days after president Ruto on December 3, 2024 slammed Kenyans fond of opposing his projects.
“There is an evil spirit of opposing everything, affordable housing, cow vaccinations, university model, they even oppose church donations,” he said.
