President William Ruto on Friday, February 21 embarked on a week-long tour of the Coastal region, promising goodies to the residents.
The tour will see President Ruto traverse the six counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Lamu and Tana River, launching various projects and and commissioning others that are complete.
Speaking in Kilifi during the burial of Mzee Kingi Mwaruwa, father to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi in Kamale village, the Head of State painted a picture of what his tour would be;
“I am here until Saturday next week for several development activities,” said President Ruto, who pledged that his administration will connect electricity for free to more than 21,000 households in Kilifi County, as well as settle thousands of squatters in the region by December 2025.
“I have already given the assignment to [Cabinet Secretaries Salim Mvurya and Hassan Joho and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi] to identify the land to be acquired from absentee landlords. By December, we will be issuing the title deeds to squatters,” he said.
Affordable Housing Agenda
President Ruto will also have an opportunity to advance the agenda of his pet projects of roads and housing, highlighting the commissioning of Kwa Jomvu-Mariakani Road, and several affordable housing projects.
These are the affordable housing projects that President Ruto will launch during his tour of the Coastal region;
Mokowe Affordable Housing Project
The government, through the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, is implementing the Mokowe Affordable Housing Project as a strategic development within Lamu County’s Lamu East Constituency.
The ambitious project, situated on a 5-acre plot, represents a significant milestone in extending the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) to Kenya’s coastal region, demonstrating the government’s commitment to nationwide housing development.
The project aligns with national development frameworks and specifically addresses the unique housing needs of coastal communities while promoting local economic growth.
Once complete, the KSh1.269 billion project will comprise of 393 residential units and 75 commercial shops. The land that the project sits on is registered under the County Government of Lamu.
Tezo Affordable Housing Project
The government is implementing the Tezo Affordable Housing Project (Tezo AHP) as a landmark development in Kilifi County’s Kilifi North Constituency.
Strategically located on a 5-acre plot along the Kilifi-Malindi Road, this ambitious project represents one of the largest affordable housing initiatives in the coastal region, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing housing needs while fostering economic growth.
The project aligns with national development frameworks and is designed to create a comprehensive community that combines quality housing with extensive social and recreational amenities.
The KSh2.537 billion project, once complete, will comprise of 1000 residential units with comprehensive amenities.
The development incorporates comprehensive amenities including:
- Two commercial centers
- Social hall and clubhouse
- Basketball court
- Kindergarten facility
- Children’s playground and outdoor spaces
- Guard house and security features
- Three waste receptacle plinth areas
- Secure boundary wall
- Landscaped green spaces
Voi Pool House Affordable Housing Project
The government is implementing the Voi Pool House Affordable Housing Project (Voi AHP) as a flagship development within Taita Taveta County’s Voi Constituency.
Located on a strategic 5-acre plot, this ambitious project exemplifies the government’s commitment to addressing housing needs in Kenya’s coastal region while stimulating local economic growth.
And just like other affordable housing projects in the country, the project, which aligns with national development frameworks, is designed to create a sustainable community that combines quality housing with essential amenities.
The KSh1.177 billion project, once complete, will comprise of 458 residential units and commercial facilities.
The Voi Pool House AHP is designed as a comprehensive residential development that integrates modern housing solutions with community amenities. The project delivers a strategic mix of housing options across three categories:
- Social Housing Units (92 units):
- 24 one-room units
- 44 two-room units
- 24 three-room units
- Affordable Housing Units (210 units):
- 48 studio units
- 114 two-bedroom units
- 48 three-bedroom units
- Commercial Component:
- 12 retail shops
- 8-unit commercial block
- Market Rate Units (144 units):
- 72 two-bedroom units
The development incorporates modern amenities including:
- Basketball court for recreational activities
- Children’s playground and outdoor spaces
- Kindergarten facility for early childhood education
- Central courtyard designed for community gatherings
- Four high-rise blocks (G+11) with supporting amenities
- Well-planned access points and circulation areas
