President William Ruto on Wednesday February 4, 2025 mourned the late Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims, who passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday.
Ruto praised Aga Khan as a visionary leader committed to uplifting those in need.
“We are deeply saddened by his passing. He defied boundaries to support those in need through healthcare and education. Our thoughts are with his family and the Ismaili community,” he said.
Aga Khan, founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), led numerous charitable initiatives, including hospitals, schools, and cultural projects in developing nations.
In Kenya, AKDN runs Nation Media Group, Aga Khan University, Aga Khan Hospitals, and several schools.
It also invests in Diamond Trust Bank, Jubilee Insurance, Farmers Choice Ltd, and Premier Food Industries.
The Ismaili Muslim community has about 15 million members, including 500,000 in Pakistan, with large populations in India, Afghanistan, and Africa.
Prince Karim Aga Khan became imam in 1957 at age 20, succeeding his grandfather.
