President Ruto launches the Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project: Inside ambitious project that will eradicate slums

President William Ruto on Thursday, March 13 broke ground for the construction of the Kibra Southlands Affordable Housing Project in Lang’ata Constituency.

The project, which sits on a 38 acre piece of land, will have 72 residential blocks with 19 floors each, with a capacity of 14,754 residential units.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto said that the project will play a huge role in eradicating slums in Lang’ata and Kibra Constituencies.

“Our affordable housing projects will eradicate slums in Lang’ata and Kibra, turning them into estates that provide decent living conditions to people,” President Ruto said.

Inside the ambitious Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project

The Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project is designed as a comprehensive mixed-use development that combines residential units with community amenities.

Upon completion, the project will deliver an extensive housing development organised into five lots;

  1. Residential Distribution: This will comprise Social Housing (4,200 units – 30 blocks), Affordable Housing (6,447 units-30 blocks), and Affordable Market Housing (3,717 units-12 blocks).
  2. Residential Building Configuration: This will comprise 72 blocks in total, with each block rising to G+18 floors (19 storeys), and modern, space-efficient designs supporting urban living.

The development incorporates essential community facilities including:

  • Primary school for educational access
  • Two community centers for social activities and gatherings
  • 390 Retail shops for convenient access to goods and services
  • Modern infrastructure for water, electricity, and waste management
  • Ample pedestrian walkways for non-motorized mobility
  • Public spaces for recreation and community interaction including landscaped gardens and playgrounds

During the course of this project, the government is upbeat that it will come with substantial benefits for the local community, such as job creation, business growth and commercial development, infrastructure and property development, just to name but a few.

President Ruto’s government, through the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, is implementing this project as a strategic development.

This ambitious project represents a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to urban renewal and providing quality housing for Kenyans.

This transformative initiative aims to address the critical housing shortage in urban areas while creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. The project is aligned with the national development agenda and specifically addresses the housing needs of Nairobi’s growing population through high-density planning and modern residential facilities.

With rapid urbanization continuing to put pressure on existing housing infrastructure, particularly in informal settlements like Kibra, the Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to creating sustainable urban communities that provide quality housing at affordable rates.
