National NewsNews

President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome held a meeting on Monday January 22, 2024 at State House, Nairobi.

The purpose of the meeting was to resolve the ongoing stand-off between the Judiciary and the Executive.

The Judicial Service Commission(JSC) through the Chief Justice Martha Koome had requested for a meeting with the president on January 15, which President Ruto welcomed on January 16.

While accepting the invitation for the meeting, President Ruto said that it should be attended by leaders from the three arms of government.

”The meeting should be between executive led by Ruto, judiciary led by Martha Koome and legislature, led by Speakers. I am ready for the conversation on how we are going to deal with vested interests, incompetence and corruption, ”Ruto said.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also attended the meeting together with Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Attorney General Justine Muturi and Solicitor Shadrak Mose.

The Chief Justice had expressed the Judiciary’s readiness to address the concerns raised by the President regarding the system.

The meeting comes several weeks after the President launched attacks on the Judiciary accusing it of being used to block government projects.

This was after the Court recently ruled against the housing levy, an order that the government failed to follow.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Raila Odinga had cautioned the Chief Justice against engaging in a meeting with the President, saying that the invitation for talks served as a tactic to put pressure on the independent Judiciary.

However, Raila emphasized the need for government to respect the Judiciary rulings.
