President William Ruto on Thursday April 25, 2024 officially opened Bunge Towers, that hosts offices and other key amenities for Senators and members of parliament (MPs). Ksh.9.6 billion taxpayers money was used for construction of the building.
The official opening of Bunge Towers, that was initially set to take place on April 19, 2024 was postponed due the death of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla.
According to the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, the 28-storey building has luxurious amenities of Kenyan legislators including a gym, a beauty parlor and a restaurant.
Wetangula stated that Bunge Towers has enough conference rooms that will be used for departmental committee meetings.
Speaking during the official opening, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa said that the building will help save taxpayers money spent on hotels for House committee meetings.
“The opening of this new Bunge Towers will save us Ksh1.5 million for a committee in a hotel for only two weeks,” said Ichung’wa.
Bunge Tower has an underground tunnel that connects it to Parliament buildings for security and comfort of legislators and staff.
Currently, most legislators have offices at the KICC while others are based at Continental House.
The Bunge Tower project was started in 2010 after the Parliamentary Service Commission sought to have sufficient office space for the MPs.
The ultra-modern building has 320 offices for Senators and MPs and a four basement floors parking spaces for up to 350 vehicles.
