President William Ruto has ordered the withdrawal of university admission letters after parents and students raised concerns over the high fees indicated.
Speaking on Wednesday August 14, 2024 while in Kisii County, President Ruto termed the admission letters as misleading.
The President said the letters showed the total costs of courses rather than the actual amounts per academic year.
“The letters that were issued by our universities were misleading because they only referred to the total cost of the courses,” he said on Wednesday at Ogembo town, Bomachoge Chache Constituency, Kisii County.
“Proper letters will be issued from today, indicating the correct amount of money a parent is supposed to pay, and not just the total cost of the course,” the President directed.
He cautioned vice-chancellors of public universities against inciting students with erroneous information and instructed them to issue new letters detailing the correct amount of fees parents ought to pay.
In addition, President Ruto reiterated the government’s commitment to providing affordable higher education to all Kenyans irrespective of their parents’ financial ability.
“I want to assure parents that no child in Kenya will be left out of higher education because of their parents’ financial status,” he said.
The President has been on a three-day working tour of Kisii and Nyamira, focusing on health, education, water and electricity projects in the two counties as well as promoting national unity.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, his Nyamira counterpart Amos Nyaribo, MPs, MCAs and a host of other leaders accompanied him.
At Ogembo town, he commissioned the construction of 244 units under the Affordable Housing Programme.
