President Ruto, TikTok CEO to meet over obscene content on app

President William Ruto will on Thursday, August 24 hold talks with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

According to the Head of State, the talks will centre around the moderation of explicit content on the Chinese video-sharing platform.

Speaking Wednesday, August 23 at the Nakuru State Lodge, Ruto said the talks follow a series of complaints from different stakeholders over the inappropriate content shared on the platform.

Last week, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula received a petition to ban TikTok in the country for promoting “inappropriate”.

The petition also expressed concerns that the platform was sharing information about its users with a third-party company without users’ consent.

“Like we have moderation capacities of other platforms, tomorrow morning we are having a conversation with the global CEO of TikTok so we can agree on a mechanism for moderation in their space to get rid of negative content,” President Ruto said.

Some of the issues raised by Kenyans about TikTok include; the promotion of violence, sex, and hate speech.
