Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has cut short her Dubai trip following the Sunday, December 3, floods that killed 60 people in Hanang District.

The State House in Tanzania has communicated that President Samia is scheduled to return to the country to monitor the impact of the disaster.

She was in Dubai attending the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) which was scheduled to run from November 30 to December 12.

Meanwhile, the President has directed government agencies to use public resources in rescue and support of affected families.

She added that the government will cover burial expenses for the floods victims as well as paying medical bills for floods victims undergoing treatment in hospitals.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Monday, December 4, traveled to Hanang District to meet the victims of floods.

This was after President Samia directed him to ensure floods victims get necessary assistance and normalcy restored in the affected region.

“The government should give temporary accommodation to floods victims who were displaced.

“All government agencies involved in disaster management to be on site to help affected residents and ensure normalcy is restored,” the President directed Prime Minister Majaliwa.

In addition, Manyara Regional Commissioner Queen Sendiga confirmed that three centers have been established in Hanang to take care of residents displaced by floods.

The Regional Commissioner also noted that all the victims will get necessary services and foodstuffs.

According to latest statistics about 5,600 people were affected by the floods while approximately 750 hectares of agricultural land was destroyed.
