President William Ruto has granted clemency to 56 Kenyans and one foreign national in an act of mercy aimed at promoting rehabilitation and restorative justice.
The announcement made on Monday by the President’s Executive Office, is based on recommendations from the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC) and is grounded in the constitutional authority granted by Article 133.
25 people will also be released after having their remaining sentences commuted.
President Ruto has declared a General Amnesty as part of a larger effort to address prison overcrowding and reduce the burden of minor offenses on the criminal justice system.
This amnesty applies to all petty offenders serving sentences of six months or less, as well as those with six months or less remaining on longer sentences.
