Police officers are in hot pursuit of a prisoner who escaped from lawful custody at Nakuru Level Five Hospital under unclear circumstances.
It is reported that Stanley Cheruiyot, a convict serving life sentence at Nakuru Main GK Prison for the offence of defilement, managed to escape from the hospital at around 12:40 am Monday, June 3.
A report filed at Kaptembwo Police Station says that Cheruiyot had a shoulder dislocation and was due for an operation at the facility the following morning when he escaped.
But what is not clear is how he managed to escape despite being guarded by two prison officers; Corporal Lesso Kigen and Constable Jackson Otweka.
“Efforts to recapture the escapee are currently in progress,” the report says.
Details of the escapee are as follows:
- ID No:30100915
- Tribe: Kipsigis
- Sub County: Kuresoi North
- Location: Kuresoi
- Village: Kongoi
- Chief: Muyoyo
- Assistant Chief: Sigilai
- Headman: Chuchuchok
“All stations are advised to be on high alert and to inform this office for collection.”
According to Dr. Samuel Waweru, the hospitals Medical Superintendent, the 29-year-old’s ward was near the fence with the neighbouring Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), insinuating that he might have escaped through KMTC.
“He had two handcuffs, one of the handcuffs was attached to the arm and the other attached to the leg. Only the handcuff attached to the arm was found,” Dr. Waweru says.
