Procedures followed after the death of a Pope

Official Confirmation and Announcement.

The Vatican reports the death of the Pope and the Carmerlengo of the Apostolic chamber announces his death.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta at 9:45 AM local time.

Sede Vacante Begins

The Vatican then enters a period known as Sede Vacante, where there is no Pope and therefore the Carmerlengo becomes the temporary head of the church`s administration. However, he cannot make any doctrinal or long- term decisions.

Pope`s Body Lies in State

The body is embalmed and laid in state at St. Peter`s Basilica or Apostolic Palace and public mourning and prayers begin. There are usually 9 days of official mourning called `Novemdiales`.

Funeral of the Pope

The funeral takes place around the 4th to 6th day after the death and is graced by heads of states, royalty and religious leaders.

The Pope is usually buried in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter`s Basilica.

Election of a new Pope.

The College of Cardinals gathers in Vatican City within 15 to 20 days after the Pope`s death. They then enter the Sistine Chapel and vote in secret ballot until a candidate receives a two- thirds majority.

The new Pope chooses a Papal name, dressed in white, and is introduced with the phrase ‘Habemus Papam’ (We have a Pope)
