Prof. Makau Mutua denies meeting Rigathi Gachagua, Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens

Prof. Makau Mutua, a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, has denied reports that he met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speculations were rife on social media on Friday, March 15 evening, suggesting that Prof. Mutua had a meeting with Gachagua at Sarvid Gardens in Kiambu County.

But through his X, formerly Twitter, account, the law scholar said nothing could be further from the truth.

“JUST to set the record straight. I met neither Rigathi Gachagua nor former AG Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens yesterday. I’ve never met Mr. Gachagua, and have no such plans,” Prof. Mutua clarified.

However, he did admit that he was at Sarvid Gardens on the very date, but not to meet the aforementioned individuals. “However, I DID meet my great friend Senior Counsel Paul Muite there to catch up over Nyama Choma.”

He launched a scathing attack on persons he says are idle for spreading the malicious propaganda. “Too many idle people!”

Prof Mutua played a pivotal role in Raila’s campaigns to capture the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position. He travelled with the former Prime Minister in different countries in the African continent, to woo heads of State into voting for Raila in the position.

Eventually, Raila lost the election to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf on February 15, 2025, in elections held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

After the election loss, Raila has since entered into a cooperation agreement with President William Ruto. The move has seen Gachagua allies axed from key National Assembly Committees, and ODM MPs taking charge of them.

It remains to be seen whether Raila will extend his support for President Ruto in 2027, when the latter will be looking to recapture the country’s highest office.

Meanwhile, after falling out with President Ruto and the subsequent impeachment from office, Gachagua has since closed ranks with Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua, and DAP-Kenya Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa, with all indications that they will work together and try to unseat Ruto as a united front come 2027 General Election.
