Herman Gakobo Kago, known as Professor Hamo, has revealed how he landed the stage name that has made him popular in the Kenyan comedy scene.

Known for his shabby dress code that mimics an unkempt academic and the catchphrase “Njooni nyote mlio na mzigo kwangu na nyi mtarudi nazo maana nina zangu za kubebe,” meaning “Come all with heavy burdens to unto me” he is no stranger to kenyan household.

Speaking about his journey as a comic on Radio 47′s breakfast show hosted by Alex Mwakideu and Emmanuel Mwashumbe, Hamo stated when he started using the persona his life has never been the same.

Born and raised in Nakuru Herman had been straggling like any other young man trying to make ends meet until he came across the Churchill show caravan in Nakuru.

Just like many comedians who auditioned for the show, he tossed his hat in the ring and began making people laugh, However in the Churchill show out of the many comedians who perform only a handful get airplay on TV.

After many appearances, he finally got his big break when he met Churchill who told him that one of his jokes would be aired on TV and this was the beginning of his breakthrough.

“From there I used to get an opportunity to appear at least every Tuesday, I was performing but not as Professor Hamo you know, I was yet to find an identity” He stated.

“In December 2014 one of the directors of the show called me aside and asked who asked me, who are you? what is your identity on stage?….the director told me I look like an intellectual”

“Then I asked him like a Professor? , he then asked me to go back home and learn everything I needed to know about the mannerisms of a professor and then came back in January 2015.”
