Protesting citizens block Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s CBD using coffins

Angry protesters on July 2, 2024 blocked Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s CBD using coffins as anti-riot police intervened to remove them.

Police were forced to disperse the ‘occupy everywhere’ protesters who had blocked Moi Avenue by removing the coffins from the busy street in the capital city.

At the same time, protesters blocked the Nairobi-Namanga Road with stones and bonfires before police intervened and arrested some of the protesters.

Meanwhile, the protests occurred in different parts in the country as citizens continued to demand reforms in the President William Ruto’s government.

Additionally, police used teargas canisters to disperse the protesters despite a recent High Court ruling against the use of teargas.

In Nairobi, along Moi Avenue, protesters had set a vehicle tyre on fire and blocked the road with stones, making it impassable.

The situation quickly escalated into running battles between the demonstrators and law enforcement, causing significant disruption in the area.

Ahead of Tuesday’s protests, dozens of anti-riot police were deployed to various towns across the country.

Police headquarters announced that precautions were taken to prevent any form of violence.

The military has been stationed at critical restricted areas across the country to assist the police in case of any chaos.

The military is reinforcing police and prison officials at various prison facilities but will not be involved in controlling protests, according to the Defence Ministry.

However, the protest organizers have insisted that their demonstrations are peaceful, aimed at mourning those shot dead during previous protests and advocating for better governance.
